Prep Instructions for H. Pylori Test (BreathTek UBT)

Bacterial Overgrowth Test, Lactose & Fructose Intolerance Test

It is important to remember:

• Do not eat or drink anything except plain water one hour before the test.
• If you are a smoker, please abstain from smoking one hour before the test.
• Do not exercise for one hour before the test.
• Ask your provider’s advice about stopping the use of the following medications two weeks before initial testing or four weeks prior to testing to confirm cure:
  • Antibiotics of any kind
  • Proton inhibitors (e.g., Prilosec, Prevacid, Aciphex, Protonix, or Nexium)
  • PeptoBismol

Your provider may wish to discuss alternative medications that you may use before taking the test.

• Ask your provider for advice about being retested four weeks after completing therapy to determine its success.

Taking the BreathTek UBT

At your provider’s office or clinic, you will be asked to do the following:

• Blow through a straw into a clean, empty tube.
• Drink Pranactin-Citric; a pleasant, lemon-flavored solution.
• Blow through a straw into another empty tube.

The test takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Your provider will notify you when the results are available.
